Dr Leonard Shan is an academic vascular and endovascular surgeon in Melbourne with appointments at St. Vincent's and Epworth Hospitals as well as The University of Melbourne.
Following extensive training in open surgical, hybrid, and endovascular procedures at multiple centres in Melbourne and Auckland, Leonard became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and member of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Vascular Surgery. Leonard returned to Melbourne to start consultant practice in highly regarded public and private hospitals. Shortly after, Leonard had the privilege to be appointed as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne.
Over the last decade, Leonard has been at the forefront of understanding outcomes that patients value the most. This allows him to tailor treatment approaches to the needs of his patients. Leonard is internationally recognised for his expertise on quality of life after surgery. He has authored over 30 publications (h-index 16) in some of the highest-ranking journals in medicine and surgery, including Circulation and Annals of Surgery. Leonard's work has been cited by over 1000 peer-reviewed journal articles. He currently sits on the editorial board of the Annals of Vascular Surgery and is a member of the Australian Cardiovascular Research Alliance.
Leonard has also undertaken a PhD on quality of life in lower extremity arterial disease which has been conducted under the tutelage of world-renowned surgeons Professor Alun Davies and Professor Peter Choong. Through this PhD, Leonard has developed an international partnership between The University of Melbourne and Imperial College London, as well as their affiliated hospitals (St. Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, Charing Cross Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital).
Leonard takes pride in providing high quality and accessible care to both public and private patients. At St. Vincent's Hospital, Leonard helped to develop the dedicated veins service which significantly decreases waiting times for venous intervention. Leonard also embraces multidisciplinary care for his patients. He is an integral member of the high-risk foot service at St. Vincent's Hospital for the comprehensive treatment and prevention of foot wounds and ulcers.
Leonard has a warm and compassionate approach to managing complex problems and works together with his patients to find the best solution. All patients will be cared for at an academic centre of excellence with a choice of 5 consulting locations for their follow-up and surveillance. Patients can be seen urgently as required with flexible appointment times and low waiting periods.
